Caitlin Clark’s arrival in the WNBA has come with unprecedented fanfare.
Anything involving the Indiana Fever’s No. 1 overall pick turns into a major talking point around the world of sports.
This attention is great for the women’s basketball game, but no doubt stressful for the 22-year-old rookie.
During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live earlier this month, NBA legend Magic Johnson offered up a simple piece of advice for Clark as she begins her professional career.
“Call Larry Bird,” Johnson said.
“Let me give Caitlin some advice. Call Larry Bird, ask him for advice. Indiana, he’s already there, and I think he can give her great advice on how to handle this situation because he went through it himself. So it would be a perfect situation. He already lives there, grew up in Indiana. I think it would be great,” the Hall-of-Fame point guard continued in his full response.
Clark has taken a beating early in her WNBA career. While some think the league’s treatment of Clark is over the top, Johnson feels this physical play is just a part of being a talented young rookie joining the professional ranks.
“Veterans are going to test you,” Johnson added. “If they feel you’ve gotten more money or more publicity… They’re upset about that.”

Clark is navigating her rookie season well — performing at a high level despite all of the outside noise. The former Iowa superstar is averaging 16.3 points, 6.2 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Fever.
Clark and the Fever will face off against the Atlanta Dream on Friday night.
