The ‘Gypsy King’ Tyson Fury has never been humbled before in the boxing ring. But on May 18, 2024, he suffered his first loss against the crafty Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A chance to win the undisputed crown was squandered. However, Fury was quick to invoke the rematch clause. Now, the giant of the heavyweight division has to wait till December to reclaim his title again.
In the meantime, one might wonder – How is he doing? How is he coping with the first loss of his career? Considering Tyson’s previous track record of spiraling out of control, it seems to be a valid question. Well, a cursory look would tell you that he is not doing well!
About a week ago, viral clips of security leading Tyson out of a bar in Morecambe in an inebriated state raised alarm bells among boxing fans. Several other video footages filmed outside the bar showed Tyson on the ground, failing to get back up, only to experience his face get planted on the concrete again, while surrounded by security staff. Is the incident reminiscent of the dark phase that Fury went through after becoming the unified heavyweight champion following his win over Wladimir Klitschko? Should we be concerned for Fury’s mental health following his devastating loss to Usyk? Well, the Mancunian boxer himself has come forward to put these rumors to rest.
Fury seems to be in high spirits!
In an interview with FUROCITY By Tyson Fury, a YouTube channel promoting his energy drink, the ‘Gypsy King’ came clean about the drunken night out he had in his hometown a few weeks ago. “I got p***ed up about two weeks ago and fell over on my face. Didn’t do any damage though, still good-looking,” Fury said.
But for the fans who are worried about his mental state right now, Tyson has a message, “I’ve had lots of messages and people phoning asking if I’m alright. You’re a grown man and have a drunken night out and all of a sudden [people think] you’re gonna jump in front of a train. Obviously from my past history people are concerned, but I’ve just been chilling out and spending time with my family.”
The “past history” Fury referenced in the interview was a grim one. After he became the heavyweight champion of the world following his win over Klitschko in 2015, Tyson Fury did not have a purpose in life. Diving head first into hedonism – indulging in alcoholism, and drugs, he suffered from a lengthy bout of depression and was also suicidal. “I didn’t care about nothing. I just wanted to die so bad,” Fury revealed in the popular podcast show The Joe Rogan Experience. However, a divine intervention saved him from crashing his car into a bridge in 2016. From his lowest ebb, Fury climbed his way back to the top of the heavyweight division in what can only be classified as a comeback story for the ages.
On the other hand, shifting focus on his match with Usyk, the 35-year-old boxer still thinks he won the fight.
Delusional or fair judgment? You decide..
After his first career loss that put a dent on his invincible status in the heavyweight division, it was only evident Tyson Fury was going to run back the tapes to analyze what went wrong. But, wait a minute! He still thinks he won the fight. To bolster his argument, Tyson cited one judge who ruled in his favor, having him 114-113 on the scorecard. Well, a split- decision victory does leave room for doubts to creep in.
“I’ve watched the fight back lots and still got the same answer – I thought I won. Usyk knows he didn’t beat me… I thought I boxed the head right off him for most of the rounds. He busted my nose in round eight, got the 10-8 in round nine and I gave him round ten. But other than that I didn’t give him any other rounds… It was actually a lot easier than I thought it’d be. you know one of the judges had me winning by round one,” Tyson stated in the same interview.
Fury vowed that in the rematch, set for December 21, he will not leave it up to the judges to decide his fate. He sees only one way to defeat Usyk: a knockout. Who do you think will win the rematch? Let us know in the comment section below.
