The world was stunned on Saturday night when the Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark was on the receiving end of a hard foul from Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter. While most WNBA fans were appalled by what Carter did, the Oscar-winning star Whoopi Goldberg spoke out to defend her on Monday’s episode of her ABC talk show The View.

But first, check out the controversial moment for yourself in the video below.

Goldberg Defends Carter

Even though WNBA officials upgraded the foul to a Flagrant I on Sunday, Goldberg argued that the move happens all the time in basketball.

“Let’s be realistic, OK? This is basketball, OK?” Goldberg said. “This happens in basketball all the time. Angel Reese got clotheslined the other day.”

Goldberg went on to accuse people of reading too much into what happened.

“This is, ‘Get out the way or I’ma move you.’ That’s what the game is … A lot of people, however, are reading this as confrontation. But this is not confrontation,” she continued. “They’re not playing on the court. They’re there to win. And just because they’re women, get over yourselves, they’re athletes.”

Sunny Hostin Chimes In

Co-host Sunny Hostin agreed with Goldberg, saying that basketball is a “contact sport.”

“It’s not dainty play. When you’re sitting there [and] you’re watching, sometimes when that happens you think, ‘Ooh, wow. I couldn’t take it,’” Hostin said. However, she admitted that the foul on Clark was “clearly a flagrant foul.”

It should be noted that Hostin is the same woman who recently claimed that Clark’s popularity is due to attention “white privilege” and “pretty privilege.”

Goldberg concluded the segment by praising all WNBA players.

“None of us can beat them,” she said. “None of us can do what they can do so let’s give them their due.”

Clark Addresses Hard Foul

Clark was open about being stunned by what Carter did to her during Saturday’s game.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Clark told The Associated Press afterwards. “It is what it is. It’s a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that’s kind of what we did.”

“I grew up playing basketball with the boys,” she added. “It’s always been physical and feisty and you have to find a way to hold your own.”

Thankfully, Clark got the last laugh. Indiana Fever beat Chicago Sky 71-70, snapping a three-game losing streak. This was also the Fever’s first home win of the season, and Clark’s free throw on the Carter cheap shot was the deciding point. Clark totaled 11 points, eight rebounds, six assists and one steal.

Many have argued that Clark’s fellow WNBA players are jealous of all of the attention that she’s received in recent months. Others have pointed out that Clark’s popularity has only helped all WNBA players because of the fresh eyeballs that she’s brought to their sport.

Goldberg and her friends on The View can defend Carter all that they want to, but it’s clear that most fans are disgusted by what she did. In the end, Clark’s fellow WNBA players might want to start respecting her as the world-class athlete and person that she is, because she’s not going anywhere.
