Novak Djokovic has faced widespread criticism following his altercation with fans during his fourth-round match against Holger Rune at Wimbledon. Following that, journalist Matthew Syed opined that the Serbian is disliked because he gatecrashed Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s duopoly in tennis.

Djokovic was extremely upset during his match against Rune as the crowd kept booing him. He was unfazed despite the behavior and went on to win in straight sets. In his on-court interview, he gave the crowd his thoughts on the issue and said he was used to the crowd booing him throughout his career.

The former World No. 1 also walked out of a BBC interview after being constantly quizzed about the issue, which also saw him face criticism from various corners. Times‘ senior journalist Syed believes that Djokovic is disliked for reasons beyond his control.

I make no apology for admiring Novak Djokovic, for believing he is the most impressive sportsman of my lifetime, for glimpsing in his resilience something of the greatness of our species. I’ve come to recognise that he will probably never be forgiven for gatecrashing the duopoly of Federer and Nadal, never tolerated for playing with such ruthless efficiency, never accepted for continuing to win at the age of 37, after operations that might have felled others.

Despite all the criticism and hate he has faced in his career, Djokovic has been pretty successful on the court. He has managed to win 24 Grand Slams so far, two more than Nadal and four more than Federer.

I’m expecting a big, big fight and it’s one of the toughest challenges on tour but I’m an ambitious guy and I like to be challenged.

Lorenzo Musetti said in his on-court interview

Musetti has won just one out of his six meetings against Djokovic on the ATP tour. The last time they met was in the third round of the French Open this year when the Serbian came from behind to win the match in five sets.
