When choosing red carpet outfits, Emma Watson does not aim for impressive designs but always focuses on the meaningful messages behind them.

Emma Watson’s red carpet outfits often contain hidden messages supporting sustainable fashion and social issues.

1. Met Gala 2016

Watson’s 2016 Met Gala outfit was a collaboration between her, Calvin Klein and sustainability company Eco-Age. The black and white outfit has a quite simple design because its interesting thing actually lies in the materials used.

“Every detail of this beautiful garment, even the parts you can’t see, is made with sustainability in mind,” the actress shared.

The body of the shirt is made of fabric recycled from plastic bottles. The first layer is made of organic cotton instead of regular cotton. The second layer of bra is made from organic silk. Even the zipper is made from a recycled material.

Watson believes her outfit fits perfectly with the Met Gala’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology” theme.

“My clothes made from reused materials are proof that technology and fashion can go hand in hand,” she said.

Watson plans to not only wear the outfit at the Met Gala, but also at other events in the future.

“I will reuse every piece of this outfit. I can wear the pants or the shirt on its own. The cape will be used for my future red carpet looks. Beautiful things should be wear it over and over again,” she said.

2. “Beauty and the Beast” launch event

At the China premiere of “Beauty and the Beast,” Watson wore a stunning evening gown by Elie Saab. In an Instagram post, Watson said the dress was made from silk thread, sequins, beads, stones, silk crepe georgette and more than 50 feet of tulle left over from the designer’s previous collection.

3. Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Celebrity red carpet outfits often take months to make but are only used once. An advocate of sustainable fashion, Emma wore a dress from the Ralph Lauren archives for the Vanity Fair Oscar party.

“Rewearing timeless designs is also a way to support sustainable fashion,” Watson shared.

That day, the actress also tattooed the words “Times Up” on her hand to show support for movements supporting victims of sexual harassment. On Twitter, Emma further shared that her tattoo is only temporary.

In an Instagram post, British designer Harris Reed said the outfit was custom-made for Watson. The tulle part of it is leftover fabric from several wedding dresses. Those wedding dresses were donated to Oxfam, a British-founded coalition of non-profit organizations dedicated to reducing global poverty.

5. Wimbledon Championships

Watson wore an elegant design by Oscar de la Renta to watch the 2023 Wimbledon championship. Previously, she wore this dress when promoting “Beauty and the Beast” in 2017.

“The white bespoke dress was created at Oscar de la Renta’s atelier in New York. The silk taffeta panels are cut and folded by hand, then shaped using natural starch. They are manufactured at the Taronisilk factory in Italy,” Watson said.
